Along with a cracking album,Janelle Monáe is also starring in not one, but two Oscar-nominated films, Moonlightand Hidden Figures, in both of which she plays pivotal roles, so it’s no surprise that you’ll have seen a bit more of her style than usual. Those who have been playing attention to her press tour run for both her movies, as well as her recent awards season appearances, will notice something of a theme going on.

Janelle Monáe only ever wears black and white. Occasionally she will wear a red accessory or a grey transition shade, but 99% of her wardrobe is monochrome in the extreme.Janelle has a reason for this, of course. And it’s a good one.

She explained to the Huffington Postin 2013 that both her parents were working class people, so therefore wears only black and white as a homage to their uniform.

“It’s a dedication to uniformity and I’m a minimalist by heart, but a lot of it had to do with me wanting to have a uniform like the working class, like my mom and my grandmother,” she said.

“My grandmother had 16 sisters and brothers and they all had to share one pair of shoes,” she continued. “And so that’s the family that I come from—I don’t ever want to be detached from that. I use it as motivation for my music and to just keep me centered, grounded and to stay on message.”
